Solving the enigmas of everyday design. My answer to the milk carton/soda can one is design related but not for ergonomic reasons but more for logic manufacturing and economical constraints: milk doesn’t need to be stored in a air-tight container; carton is a good and cheap container material; it’s easier and cheaper to manufacture a foldable square milk carton, than a round one. Soda on the other hand need an air-tight container; glass bottles first, then soda cans, ergonomics come in but it would be ridiculous to try to easily manufacture a square shaped aluminum can (which would then have 4 sides, 8 joints rather than one surface and 2). It just wouldn’t make sense. (via core77)
