BWM GINA concept car

Celle là m’a fait tomber en bas de ma chaise: GINA BMW concept car. Reviewing’s the car’s skin as something necessary but not necessarily made the same way as in the last century, they have tested a fabric that stretches over a wire frame, flexibility and subtlety ensues. I love the philosophy behind the material exploration; Chris Bangle, design director at BMW explains: “It’s about being flexible, context over dogma.”

Moi j’ai compris celle comme: revoir l’idéologie de la coque de l’automobile. Faire fie de toutes traditions établies, jamais disputées, ces idées autoritaires jamais doutées, qui pesent sur l’innovation. Ça semble tout de même être une industrie particulièrement “pognée”.
I’m with Charles, the “context of dogma” phrase is nearly as meaningless as the average “Cold Play” lyric.
Having said that, I’m stunned by the negative response this design exercise is getting in the auto press, you’d swear that BMW had proposed that the earth orbits around the sun or something!
Jim, I think that’s exactly where the context over dogma comes in: it’s a very conservative industry, based on very traditional ideas of what these machines should or should not do, should or should not look like. When Bangle speaks of context over dogma, he’s suggesting reviewing what ideas have been though and followed for so long, rules that were never really disputed or questionned. Context: With today’s new materials, new composite technologies, does a car’s exterior need to be made of steel? Does it need to have a definite shape? Obviously not, but thinking otherwise would be doubting automotive tradition.
I’m actually not that surprised that the industry is taken aback from it and responding so negatively. Bummer.

Vraiment nice, spéciallement pour les lumières frontales qui donne réellement vie à la voiture. Certains vont dire que c’est trop simpliste et trop direct d’insérer des “yeux”, mais l’effet est surprenant.
Et quand on y pense, à grande échelle, ça risque de couter moins cher de remplacer le tissus que de remplacer une porte en aluminium qui est bosselé. Or même si la structure interne est bossé, ça ne parait plus avec le tissus.
