¶ Kameraflageis context-sensitive display technology that enables the ability to add a second camera-specific layer of information to scenes. Works with the fact that “digital cameras see a broader spectrum of light (colors) than human eyes. By rendering content in these invisible colors we are able to create displays that are invisible to the naked eye, yet can be seen when imaged with a digital camera.”
¶ Picture NY without pictures. This is ridiculous: NYC is considering rules that require a permit and a $1 million in liability insurance for any group of two or more people who want to use a camera in a single public location for more than a half hour. Good-bye indie everything. Sign the petition. (Merci lili)
¶ 2007 winners of the BusinessWeek’s International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA). Industrial design galore. I always have a sweet spot for sexy redesigned tools like the framing hammer or the inverted wrench. (via i.nerver.nu)
¶ Works of the Russian photographer Alexey Titarenko: des foules full flous. J’aime des comparaisons intellectuelles inter-mediums: “Imbued with a down-trodden moodiness reminiscent of the stories of Dostoyevsky”. MP3 interview with the artist available as well.
¶ Typographiquement vôtre: Typolution d’Olivier Beaudoin (via Ironica) and if you like graphic design check out Krghettojuice and Ian Brown’s Work.
¶ Universe is Jonothan Harris’ (of We Feel Fine fame) lastest work. The universe methaphor is “presents current events as constellations of words — a tag cloud of our collective consciousness.” I suggest you listen to the TEDtalk first then hop over to try it out.
¶ Video-tecture: Archinect lists a series of music videos “that overlap the [...] format with architecture, landscape, and/or urbanism”. I’m glad the list is conceptually inclined–ideas of what is architecture–instead of simply stating videos filmed in popular constructions. Even includes 50 Cent’s P.I.M.P.: like other “contemporary mainstream hip hop videos [it has] almost completely perverted architecture to a ridiculous farce where shiny white villas, neo-baroque staircases, and humongous pool areas are complimentary served with bling, cars, girls, and Cristal.”
Oh. Boy.
¶ The origine of the iPhone : un écran à la place de boutons rotatifs, un stylet pour écrire et un GUI qui utilise la police Univers: si c’est pas ça le future, je ne saurait jamais ce que c’est.
¶ Best link this week as “The Story Gets Deeper”: HBOvoyeur. Be ready to want to see everything. How would one call this kind of production? Wikipedia calls it a theatrical multimedia experience and marketing campaign spreading over “the main website, HBO On Demand and HBO Mobile exclusive content, MySpace pages for the characters from the stories, supporting websites, and additional content for those willing to follow the “breadcrumbs” hidden in the other media”.
¶ Beautiful black and white photographic coverage of a Daft Punk show. (merci Francis)
¶ BusinessWeek: How the top bloggers earn money.
¶ Gorgeous work from Jonas Torvestig’s graphic design portfolio. Design is to the Swedish what Tim Hortons is to Canadians.
¶ Thomas Raschke’s Wire Frame sculptures. If you have ever worked with 3d software, you will find this quite impressive.
¶ If you ever need clear, emergency graphic instructions as to ditch the rigidness of the corporate office life and live like our indigenous ancestors of yesteryears, well, here they are.
¶ Wallpaper* Architects Directory 2007. Periodic table of a 101 of the world’s most exciting architects. (via Kollectif)
¶ Why Man Creates : a short film by Saul Bass. FYI, Saul Bass is the one who designed the great Hitchcok movie openings.
¶ Typographica’s favorite fonts of 2006. Fresh stuff with lots of personality. The Guardian font is especially well set. Rumba and Omnes are my 2 favs.
¶ Grip Music Video for dutch band zZz “is a one take, top shot videoclip with professional trampoline gymnasts simulating typical video effects.” Love that beachball.
¶ Weather icons from various press websites. Me loves infographics. The Weather Network and the NYT win in my book for clarity, Le Monde is thinks artistic abstraction is a plus, and This is Jersey has these tableaux with silly slipping little people.
¶ Type The Sky: you can make typography out of anything, even empty space between buildings.
¶ Great interview with entrepreneurial designer Robert Brunner. He started his business after college, then ditched that to work at Apple, then ditched that to work at Pentagram and is now setting up a new product design business called Ammunition.
¶ Francis va voir ça (graphic design of the day): Round with a great flash interface and german synthetic illustrator Thomas Traum.
¶ Pentagram explains the design of the new sign on the NYTimes building. The beak shape of the pieces is quite clever.
¶ Ironic Sans does it again: An analysis of terrorist organization logos. Stars and guns seem to be the common practice.
¶ Solving the enigmas of everyday design. My answer to the milk carton/soda can one is design related but not for ergonomic reasons but more for logic manufacturing and economical constraints: milk doesn’t need to be stored in a air-tight container; carton is a good and cheap container material; it’s easier and cheaper to manufacture a foldable square milk carton, than a round one. Soda on the other hand need an air-tight container; glass bottles first, then soda cans, ergonomics come in but it would be ridiculous to try to easily manufacture a square shaped aluminum can (which would then have 4 sides, 8 joints rather than one surface and 2). It just wouldn’t make sense. (via core77)
¶ Shoot’em Up movie trailer. Why are guns and gun fighting still considered cool? I don’t get it.
¶ Super cool design studio of the day: Pet Punk. My favorite is their Effigy commercials. They also have a neat behind the scenes flickr feed.
¶ Flickr: Long exposure + glowsticks, flashlights and LEDs = fantastic urban light drawings. You just can’t make this stuff up on the computer. What’s fun about it is the continuous experimentation and adjusting it requires because it’s so hard to predict the results before hand. Who want to go night shooting in Montreal with me? (merci francis)
Winners and Shortists des Cannes Lions 2007. (Via Pat Lagacé, as if.)
¶ Eine’s East End Shopfront Shutter Letters : Typo old-school + graffiti : on aime ça.
