¶ Drop dead gorgeous is a series of photographs of young women dying of overconsumption of common goods. Death by cookies is going to happen to me pretty soon.
¶ The Ergonomic Violin. (merci papa)
¶ “Men, War & Peace presents the work of David Lachapelle and James Nachtwey alongside a series of Helmut Newton’s portraits of men. [...] Critics of the exhibition say it isn’t appropriate to contrast such different subject matters because it devalues the weight of nachtwey’s work. However, by contrasting the worlds of fantasy and reality the effect is just the opposite and the result is an incredibly powerful exhibition.”
¶ Future phones recharge themselves with a little physical activity. Et j’aimerais juste pouvoir shaker mon iPod à full-charge (pis là tu chantes “Shake it like a polaroid picture” en même temps).
¶ Gardez vos bouchons de champgne au nouvel an cause the DWR Champagne Chair Contest is back. (merci francis)
¶ Missisauga is getting a new tower with a neo-expressionistic esthetic. “Suburbs around the world want to become metropolises, [...] But we don’t think they should. They have their own character. They should create their own identity.”
The 10 most dangerous play things of all time (les descriptions des accidents sont hilarantes) et 10 Tech Concepts You Need to Know for 2007 (du béton flexible!).
¶ A solution to your “I really need a candle holder but all I got is this artichoke” problem. Or any other of your favorite vegetables.
¶ “Volume is a sculpture of light and sound, an array of light columns positioned dramatically in the centre of the garden at the Vicotria & Albert Museum in London. It responds spectacularly to human movement, creating a series of audio-visual experiences. Step inside and see your actions at play with the energy fields throughout the space, triggering a brilliant display of light and sound.” Make sure you check out the video.
¶ Too much content, not enough time to watch it all: Pitchfork list their Top 25 Music Videos of 2006 and docopenhagen lists his top 50 music videos of 2006. UPDATE: But the best compilation remains the Antville Music Video Awards 2006.
¶ New Siemens Somatom 64 Ct Scanner. It takes 192 images per second to then display very precise and immediate 3 dimensional images to the doctor and patient without cutting an inch of flesh.
¶ Accidental blue screen.
¶ There are some very nice photography artists at the M + B Gallery in L.A.
¶ A trail of diamonds is a photoessay by Kadir Van Lohuizen that follows the path of the diamond from the mines to the jewellery store. “In Angola, Sierra Leone, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, miners work for food but receive no wages”.
¶ Stitchy McYarnpants presents The Museum of Kitchy Stiches.
¶ Rwanda 2004: Vestiges of a Genocide. (merci francis)
¶ What happens when a golf ball is sent hurtling towards everyday objects at ridiculously high speeds?
¶ Business week lists The Best (and Worst) of Everything 2006 and a few of this year’s good Innovation and Design books.
¶ Olympus presents A day in Africa as seen by 100 photographers.
¶ Designboom’s The Skin of Corian competition results.
¶ The Time Fountain. “if you get a strobe light fast enough, you can make it look like dripping water is going in slow motion or even backwards. This phenomenon happens because strobe lights can ‘capture’ an instant in time and allow your eyes to see it as lasting longer than an instant.” Very neat installation. It’s like low-tech high-tech science.
¶ Vendredi Video 6: (1) Jazz band 12Twelve’s bassist Javier García is the author of their Autobahn Polizei video. (2) Video for Black Refuge by José González side project Junip. (3) A four and a half minute compliation of every Ray Harryhausen animated creature in feature films, presented in chronological order.
¶ The best of 2006. That time of the year again. This page will surely fill up in the weeks to come. UPDATE: here’s a better list of best lists. We sure do like to make lists.
J’y serai.
¶ Pour Vanou qui ne se sent pas full bien en ce moment: Aperture Tricks – All about Apple Aperture.
¶ Pingmag: Interview with BarberOsgerby and Partick Evans, this one is for you: the amazing world of pop-up books.
¶ Roxik flash toy: Missing Link. People and buildings in a tornado, then comes the earth?
¶ Parking perfection game. Jf will love this. Park your car and don’t bump into stuff. (Thanks Dave)
¶ Vendredi Video 5: youtube populus: (1) Youtube: Fast Food Freestyle. (2) Youtube: Christmas lights à la rock & roll show (via faole). (3) Youtube: Banned commercials.
¶ 2006 “10 worst toys” list. “Toy aisles should not be used to encourage food-eating competitions, which invite potential choking and ingestion injuries, particularly for young children.”
